Van Dover, Cindy Lee. The Ecology of Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vents.

Reference for: Chapter 4, Hydrothermal Vents

This remains the definitive book on the subject, offering the widest breadth and depth of topics. Van Dover is an awesome writer and her work is highly readable, even when its highly technical. This is another one of Professor Sean’s favorite books.

This is an awesome book, incredibly detailed and comprehensive in its discussion of the geology, physics, chemistry, and biology of vents and their communities of organisms. At the same time, the writing is excellent, clear and engaging. Van Dover loves hydrothermal vents and it comes through in her writing. This book makes an excellent reference for anyone who wants to learn more about this amazing communities.

*Young, Craig M., and Kevin J. Eckelbarger, editors. 1994. Reproduction, Larval Biology, and Recruitment of the Deep-Sea Benthos. Columbia University Press: NY

This outstanding, multi-authored compilation begins with the early theoretical history of deep-sea reproductive biology. This history provides a theoretical framework for the chapters that follow. Deep-sea benthic biologists are a heady lot with a sharp sense of humor and this volume does not disappoint.
